Kate DiCamillo is an award-winning author of children’s and adult novels. Her popular children’s book titles include: Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tales of Despereaux, and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. (For a full list of DiCamillo’s publications, click here.)
On Sunday, October 15th, 2017, DiCamillo spoke at Friends’ Central and signed copies of her latest book, La La La, a mostly-picture book about a young girl who sings to the universe and is trying be heard. The illustrations, by Jaime (Jimyung) Kim, are gorgeous.
The majority of attendees were parents with their young children, but one or two other Friends’ Central upper schoolers like myself were in attendance, as were a few faculty and staff. Many of the parents and adults who attended are teachers at other schools.
DiCamillo is absolutely hilarious. She told funny stories, she told serious stories, and was overall cheerful and optimistic. She spoke honestly about her life- about her father leaving her family, her path to becoming an extremely well-known author, and the processes she uses for developing and writing some of her books, among other things.
Even though I have not read her books in quite a few years, the opportunity to hear DiCamillo speak was too exceptional to pass up. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and seventeen year old me knows ten year old me is grateful to have been there.
